8.23.10

Considering his new contract, I thought I’d start the week off with the compulsory photo of Riley.

Wasn’t it nice of him to smile for the camera? :)

8.24.10

My friend Jess sent me these in the mail last week and I’ve been diving into them bit by bit. First of all, what a great pick-me-up to send... some days move at a snail’s pace around here and these are a great diversion. Secondly, I am SHOCKED by how many episodes I haven’t seen before. I could have sworn I had seen the majority of I Love Lucy reruns, but I was sorely mistaken.

I’m glad to say I am now rectifying that.

It’s also a very ironic gift, as my good friend Mandy calls me the Ricky to her Fred quite often. I love when little coincidences like that fall into life.

Speaking of sweet little gifts, I forgot to show you guys what Mary brought me when she and Annalyn came to visit a few weeks ago. Isn’t that cute? She has the mistaken notion that I’m like Wonder Woman [although I did believe myself to be the Bionic Woman as a child] and found this fun little necklace to drive home her point.

When she gave it to me I instantly thought of Marla, who is obsessed with scrabble tiles, because the photo is laid overtop of a scrabble tile with a “W” on the other side. People are so creative...

8.26.10

This is a screen shot off of Padma, featuring my current favorite app: Pocket Pond. I downloaded this a few months ago simply because I LOVE the realistic background sounds it makes [I wish I could make an audio of it for you to hear]. If I turn it on and close my eyes, I can almost imagine myself outside by the lake... it’s subtle sounds of nature and birds and insects by the faint ripples of water might be the most relaxing sounds I’ve ever heard.

And the sounds I miss the most in life.

I also love this app because the last time Dad was here and Susie’s family stopped by, I was showing Tyler how you can tap your finger on the water to make the water ripple and the fish swim away. He thought that was so cool, and when he finished tapping it my Dad asked him if he needed a towel to dry his finger off.

And Tyler stopped for a second to look.

And Dad thought his joke was HILARIOUS.

I kind of did, too. :)

I’m pretty sure half of Twitter was watching the much anticipated release of Taylor Swift’s new video Mine on Friday night. Not so much because everyone loves Taylor as much as everyone was excited to see Pastor Pete and his family make their video debut.

They had to keep it very hush-hush, but apparently anything can happen when you live in Nashville... including getting a call from Taylor Swift to see if your family will fly to Maine and pretend to be HER family. Pete and Brandi played a young Taylor’s parents, and their three boys played Taylor’s future children at different ages.

I asked Brandi if Gage had an agent yet... just look at that cute face and those dimples! I think he’s got a future in the biz. :)

8.28.10

So, this picture is kind of cheating, because I actually took it LAST week and then forgot to put it into Gitz Bits. But it was waaaaay too cute not to share with you guys so I’m using it this week instead.

It’s my blog. I figure I can bend the rules. :)

Remember the Shan Clan? This is my Yodi [aka Eliana] and I snapped this photo through my webcam while we were Skyping. I was videoed in just in time to be a part of a Fancy Conference she was holding.

You heard that right. A Fancy Conference. There were signs and admission and everything. [Speaking of which, I still owe her a quarter.] I learned a great deal about how to dress fancy and speak French as she read to us from her Fancy Nancy book. I adore being a part of this family.

Pinkies up, Dahling...

8.29.10

Alright, guys... now I need some advice and opinions from all of you... because I won a giveaway on my friend Robin’s blog! I get to have three cans of Behr Ultra Interior paint [it has the primer in the paint] delivered to my door ... which means I need to choose a color PRONTO [like, by tomorrow] and decide what I am going to paint.

Let’s say, hypothetically, that this is your kitchen. Would you paint the cupboards? And if you would, what color would you paint them? And if you have painted cupboards, am I out of my mind? Is it difficult?

The other thing I’ve wanted to do forever is paint my woodwork/trim in my house some shade of white to give it that Pottery Barn look and brighten things up a bit. Anyone done this? Is it a huge pain?

What do you all think? The three cans have to all be one color, so it’s either the kitchen cupboards [no idea on a color] or the trim/doors.

Opinions, please!!! [And volunteers to paint if you’re so inclined...] :)

Riley's New Contract

Wowza, people. That was one seriously close vote on the logo for Blog Peep Questions! Honestly... total nail biter. :) I had a few email submissions from those who subscribe to get the blog posts in their email inbox every day, and I promised I would include their votes as well.

Final tally:

Bird Peep: 27

Cutest Blog Dog Ever: 24

I’ll be totally honest and say that I think the bird fits the theme of the posts better, too. But when I broke the news to Riley, I totally blamed it on all of you. I mean, what else could I do when I looked at this pitiful face:

_MG_7555

He’s ok now, though. I gave him some extra pork roast to eat with his antidepressant medication tonight and assured him that his position as blog dog is a permanent one. I think he’s a little less trusting, however, because he’s demanded a new contract assuring at least one photo of him appears on here every week. And a raise in his allotted number of daily Cheerios.

He drives a hard bargain, but I’m a sucker for those big eyes. :)

So, from here on out, this remains the Blog Peep Questions logo:

But he remains the alpha:

A Winner and a Plan

Man, it was fun doing a giveaway again. Just like old times. :)

To answer many of your questions about how it felt to get the paints out again:

I loved it. And I missed it. And it definitely hurt more than it used to. It’s amazing sometimes that I don’t realize how things have changed for me physically until I go back and do something that used to be more simple.

But the fun of holding a paintbrush wins out, so I am going to spend some time in the next few weeks trying to figure out easier ways to play around with canvases again. And since figuring that out will take trial and error, I’m obviously going to be making colorful canvases with lovely sayings on them in the process.

See where I’m going with this? :)

If you didn’t win today’s canvas, I highly recommend you keep coming back on Thursdays for awhile, because I have a feeling I’ll be giving away some creative doodles on canvas just for you.

But TODAY this little canvas goes to:

IMG_1733

JEN!!! Girl, it looks like I’m shipping this baby to Australia!!! :)

I can’t tell you all how much fun it was for me to have so many of you enter... come back next Thursday and I promise you’ll have another chance!

For now, have an amazing weekend and enjoy the people you love.

YOU:create ... Week 7

So, as of yesterday morning I hadn’t done a thing to get ready for today’s YOU:create.

I know. I’m not proud of me, either.

As the host of this little project, I’m supposed to be a bit more on the ball... but I’ve been even more tired than usual and was hoping some energy and inspiration would just randomly hit me over the head.

Lucky for me, that’s exactly what happened.

I was reading through the comments of yesterday’s post, when Jill Wadle mentioned this quote: “Faith is taking the first step even when you don't see the whole staircase.” You know me, I LOVE a good quote, and this one was totally new to me. I kept mulling over all the ways I could write a post about it, and decided it was so simple and straightforward that it didn’t really need any elaboration.

What it needed was a canvas.

IMG_1728

So, for the first time in over a year, I made a quick little canvas.

And now I’m going to give it away!

IMG_1733

All you have to do is leave me a comment below to be entered into the drawing. [Only one comment per person, please.] I’ll leave the drawing open until tomorrow [Friday] at 5pm, and then I’ll put up a post announcing the winner. :)

Good luck!

God is God.

I have had so many conversations about heaven and our spirits and what I believe in the past month and a half. Very few of them have been instigated by me. Most of them are discussions with friends who are trying so hard to figure out why the things in our lives happen, and they want to know what I think about it all. They want to know if I’ve had any revelations about life and death and Dad.

The truth is, I haven’t.

The truth is, I believe what I’ve always believed... and I’m living life after Dad’s death the same way I did before. I just keep trying to do the next right thing, while stepping forward in faith and trust.

I know, it’s not a sexy answer. But it is the truth.

Shortly after Dad died, I was having one of those conversations with Katie, my best friend from high school. Katie and I grew up in each other’s homes, and my dad loved her like another daughter. Despite “Katie” being her full given name, Dad liked to lengthen it to Katherine or Kathleen... just to be a stinker and get a rise out of her. And I think he especially enjoyed her because she was as ornery as he was. She laughed at his jokes even if they weren’t funny, and threw as many back at him as she could think up.

But he’d give her hugs and tell her he loved her as easily as he’d poke fun at her, and that’s why losing him broke her heart as well as mine. She lost her second dad. And when we were talking she said that she didn’t understand why Dad had to be the one to go. She kept trying to understand why God needed him in heaven more than we needed him here.

I realized how many people had said the same thing to me over the previous weeks... that he was such a good man, but that God must have needed him more. And I have to tell you, I just don’t believe that’s true.

God is God. He can do all, see all, be all.

God doesn’t need us for anything.

WE NEED HIM.

I think the truth is that we all need Dad here more than God needs anything. But because God is God, He knows the big picture that we don’t. And if it was Dad’s time to be with Him in heaven, then it was for Dad’s sake, or for us to learn something by his absence, or to spread the lesson of his legacy.

I think it was just something God foresaw in a greater plan that He sees and we don’t.

That’s why we have faith. We are simply called to trust that He knows better than we do. Whether we like it or not.

For me, it’s a lesson I learned as I got sicker and lost so many abilities. I remember thinking that it made absolutely no sense to me that God would give me so many talents and gifts, and then not let me have the opportunity to keep using them. So many things I loved to do were slowly being stripped away, and because I had used them for His glory I couldn’t understand how being without them could be the right thing.

He gave me a voice to sing His praises, and I used it to lead worship at church, sing at wedding celebrations and to bring peace to those at funerals. I spoke at and led retreats, I was social and did good deeds for others when I was out and about in the world. I lived life happy, dancing and laughing and trying to bring joy to people.

I couldn’t understand why he gave me the gifts if they were just going to be taken away.

But then I learned that I had the gifts when He needed me to use them. I didn’t squander and waste my talents, and they brought Him glory when they were supposed to. And I realized that if my talents were gone, if they were taken from me, then it was because I wasn’t supposed to have them anymore.

I trusted that He saw the bigger picture, and I stepped forward in faith by living the life that was in front of me. I stepped forward, knowing that whatever He wanted from me now, He would make sure I had the gifts to use in the moment. My gifts back then served God’s purpose, and if they were gone, so was that purpose.

I believe the same is true for Dad. He took the gifts God gave him at any given time in his life and he used them. He didn’t squander and waste his talents, and he brought God glory when he was supposed to. And if Dad is gone, if he was taken from us, it’s because He’s not supposed to be here anymore.

Trust me when I tell you that I would rather lose all my abilities and freedoms a million times over than to lose Dad. He was a gift in all of our lives, and we cherished him. But we have to keep stepping forward in faith, trusting that God sees the big picture and knowing He will give us what we need to get through any given moment.

Searching for answers beyond that is just me trying to do God’s job... and I trust that He has that covered without me.

8.16.10

Riley, in an effort to prove at all times that he is not actually a dog, will not play on command. He doesn’t like to fetch or do normal dog things, and tends to only use his toys as a means of getting attention. If he brings me a toy it’s so I’ll stop whatever I’m doing and throw it, but he rarely goes to get it and bring it back. Instead, he rolls onto his back so I can rub his belly.

I am incredibly well trained.

However, the toy above is one of his few exceptions. My friend Gail sent him this toy of Mr. Bill and he will, on occasion, pick it out of his toy basket for the express purpose of tossing it in the air to catch it.

He’d be so embarrassed to know I’m outing him for the dog he really is.

My favorite part of the toy is that if you squeeze his belly he screams, “Oh, nooooo!” in the way only Mr. Bill can. And if you squeeze his belly and throw him while he’s screaming...

... well, it’s hours of entertainment. Or at least minutes of entertainment.

For me. Not the dog. divider blue

I have been on a desperate hunt to find any sort of food that might not irritate this annoying ulcer and allow me to keep it in my stomach for any length of time.

So far, these pretzels are my main staple. Manna from the heavens, I tell you.

And because the one thing that actually settles my stomach is a Sonic lime slush, I splurged and bought myself a blender. This one also chops like a food processor so I’m hoping it will slice and dice all the things my hands no longer allow me to.

Now I just need the ingredients for the Sonic slush and I’m set. I am working with an inside contact in hopes of procuring the actual Sonic mix, but it’s like a top secret Alias spy mission so I can’t tell you any more than that or I’d have to kill you.

But since this is my set up most days, sitting in bed with a computer and an iPad and trying not to throw up, I’m pretty sure you all are safe on the whole “I’d have to kill you” scenario. Unless I found a way to run you over with my walker.

Which, by the way, I am totally regretting naming George. I should have named it Texas Ranger.

Get it? Walker. Texas Ranger.

Ok, all that boring stuff this week was leading up to my BIG Saturday!!!

Mom decided I needed a pick me up, and since it’s been over six years [Seriously. SIX YEARS] since I had a professional haircut, we had Susie’s stylist Sandy come to the house. I got a cut and a color, and I realized why they are called professionals.

Because they know what they’re doing.

And I don’t.

And here’s the final result.

Yes, people. I stood in front of the mirror for you and took a picture of my hair. And I am sure you can tell by the look on my face how phenomenally ridiculous I felt while doing it. But I had to give props to the woman who managed to take my pitiful hair and get a decent cut out of it. It’s about half as thick as it used to be as I’ve lost a lot of hair being so sick this past year, and she actually made it look like it has a little oomph.

Miracle worker, she is. And the fact that she colored my eyebrows to match my hair? Genius. She’s a keeper. :)

Blog Peep Questions: Round 12

Ok. First thing’s first. I have a pressing question for YOU...

Which one of these Blog Peep logos do you prefer?

blog peeps logo

OR...

blogpeeprileylogo

I know. You were expecting something a little more important, weren’t you? But I really can’t decide, so I’m leaving it up to you which one I use in the future. Leave your choice in the comment section and whichever is liked the most, I’ll use. Never let it be said we aren’t a democracy around here. :)

Now, onto some of YOUR questions...

If a movie was made about your life, what would it be called?

I said this line in passing to a friend of mine a few years ago, and it immediately struck me that it would be the perfect title for a book [and, in turn, a movie]: My Life is So Crazy My Dog is on Antidepressants.

Right? Isn’t that perfect? And, sadly, totally true!

This question segues into a few others you all have asked. Namely, What would you title your book? Are you writing a book? and What’s one writing project you’ve been putting off?

Well, the book title we’ve already covered, and the other answer is... aren’t I kind of already writing a book for you all? I’m just doing it in tiny little daily installments here on the blog. :) Think of it this way... if I wrote a book, I wouldn’t have the time or energy to write here every day. Not to mention, you get this for free and you’d have to shell out your hard earned money for a book!

So, the answer to whether or not I’m putting off any writing projects... Nope! This blog is my writing project. Which means YOU are all my writing project.

What could be more important than you? :)

Who would you want cast in your role for the movie?

I can’t imagine who would play me. Of course, I want to say Jennifer Garner, but that’s mostly because I’m so obsessed with all things Alias that the idea of her playing me would make my head explode. And it’s the only way I could ever pretend to have her perfectly sculpted arms. [My friend Shannon and I refer to them as “Alias arms.” We need to get a life. We know this.]

I really like Rachel McAdams in The Notebook, and Kyra Sedgwick in Something to Talk About, but I’m not sure if I think they’d be right to play me as much as I just totally want to have the chutzpa of their characters in those movies.

If you were to star in a movie, which would it be?

I would LOVE to live Meg Ryan’s life in You’ve Got Mail. Seriously. First of all, she’s adorable. I love the idea of walking the streets of New York, picking up flowers on my way to work, stopping at different vendors and eating lunch at a sidewalk cafe while watching the people walking by.

And speaking of work, to own that children’s bookstore? I’d be in heaven. I love the books... and to get to take a break in the day to put on a hat and act out stories to the kids who came to listen? Come on. How fun can life get? Plus, the store itself has so much character... you can almost smell the old wood and the polish and the fresh scent of new paper. And I would need a character in my life like Birdie who could serve me tea on pretty china and tell me stories about her life that are too far fetched to be true. Except they are.

Don’t even get me started on her apartment. It’s so happy and quaint and perfectly her. And if I had Tom Hanks show up with daisies because they are a happy flower... well, let’s just say I’d be happy in that movie.

divider green

Ok, now don’t forget to vote on which logo you like better, and feel free to ask any questions that come to mind in the comment section.

Anything goes. :)

Flashback Friday: Raccoon Anyone?

Awhile back, Mom and Dad were noticing that a woodchuck had been scratching the wood on their hot tub and, being a resourceful man with time on his hands [aka: retired], Dad set to work setting some live traps to try to catch the little sucker.

Fast forward to now, when there are still live traps outside and Mom [while brave] has no intention of doing anything about them. Well, my Uncle Bill has been good enough to check on them for her and is as determined as Dad was to catch this woodchuck.

Why am I telling you about this?

Because all they keep catching are HUGE raccoons.

Why is that so funny to me?

Read this old post and you’ll see:

divider blue

Mmmm... Raccoon
[originally posted: July 17, 2008]

Here's an interesting dilemma in my life: my condo complex has a raccoon problem. See that photo below? It's of the world's largest raccoon. And it's in my parking lot. Even more disgusting is the fact that right after this photo was taken it slithered down into the storm drain.

That's apparently where it lives.

IMG_1266

I added those handy-dandy red arrows to make sure you could tell what blob I was talking about, seeing as it is a bit on the blurry side. That's because I took the photo at night, without the flash, through the window of my sliding glass door. That, and the fact that Riley was jumping up and down, knocking me off-balance, begging for the chance to save us from the raccoon that could eat him for a midnight snack. He's a protector, that 10 pound ball of fluff.

Mostly, the raccoon has been stalking my neighbor, Candace. On more than one occasion he/she has cornered Candace in the parking lot while she was walking her dog, Martini (who is about Riley's size but smart enough to be scared out of her wits). Candace was throwing garbage in the dumpster at one point and the animal leaped out of the dumpster at her.

If there is anything that could get me to throw down my crutches and run, I'm pretty sure that would be it.

Last week, Riley and I were laying on the couch when he sat up ready to fight and I heard this annoyingly high-pitched screaming coming from outside. And there, on my patio, was the huge raccoon FREAKING OUT.

So, after calling my friend Susie to tell her about the crazy raccoon, I called Animal Control. Otherwise known as the most unhelpful people on the planet. (If someone from Animal Control is reading this, I'm sorry. But in this case it was true.) I explained to the woman that there was (what I assumed to be) a rabid raccoon on my patio and could they please do something about it?

Uhm... yeah. Not so much.

Apparently the animal control people only have a contract with my town between the hours of 8 and 5. Even though it was before 5:00 when I made the call, catching a raccoon would require traps to be set out overnight and since they aren't contracted to come out during the night they wouldn't do it. Why, you ask? Because it would be inhumane to let the raccoon sit in a trap overnight.

Yep.

Then the woman proceeds to ask me if the raccoon was female. She said it may be up around my house freaking out because it was in labor. I told her I had no idea if it was male or female. Did she think I went out to pet it and give it an exam? I mean, seriously. Then she asked me if there is a food source outside, like a dumpster. I explained to her again that I live in a condo complex, so yes, there are dumpsters on every corner.

The woman then told me that if we could remove the dumpsters it would help the situation.

I'm just going to let you digest that comment for a second.

Ok, moving on. She then informed me that really, because our town is growing farther out, we are actually encroaching on the raccoon's home... so it's really more us irritating them than them irritating us.

I realized at that point if I wasn't willing to join hands with the raccoon and sing "Kumbaya" I wasn't going to get very far with animal control. So apparently the raccoons have a permanent home in the storm drains.

All of this, believe it or not, reminded me of a story from my childhood. (You all knew it was coming eventually, didn't you?) There was a sweet little old lady that lived in the teeny-tiny town of Irvington, near where I grew up. We called her Grandma Colwell, even though we were of no relation... but we had known her forever and she babysat my dad when he was little.

Irvington, to give you perspective, had a building that housed a general store, post office, restaurant, gas station and hotel. All in the same building. Growing up, we would ride our horses to see Grandma Colwell and she'd give us a nickel to buy candy at the General Store.

Basically, think of the Walton's and you've got the picture.

My dad would sometimes take me with him to see Grandma Colwell and have lunch with her. She truly made the best apple pie I've ever tasted, but other than that my main staple at her house was peanut butter and jelly. Thank God. Because she would concoct dishes for Dad and herself that I never really had an interest in trying. I may have been young, but I wasn't stupid.

I remember one particular afternoon when Dad carried the dishes into the kitchen and came back out looking green. We sped in his truck the mile down the road to our house where he went inside and was not seen for quite awhile.

You've guessed by now, right? Yep... she fed him raccoon. My dad ate roadkill. And if Grandma Colwell was alive today I'm pretty sure she'd have a solution to my raccoon problem.

I'm just sayin'.

YOU:create ... Week 6

This week, we’re combining a YOU:create with a Blog Peep Question.

Ready?

blogpeeprileylogo

I’ve been asked about a million versions of this same question:
What special scrapbooking program do you use?

The quick answer: none.

When I first started digital scrapbooking, I didn’t really know the whole medium existed. It was just getting harder for me physically to use my hands and lean over a table, so I had the bright idea to scan in some papers that I loved and put some pages together in Microsoft Publisher.

Yep. That’s my big scrapbooking program. The one I already had on my computer. Turns out, though, that it worked so well it’s what I’m still using now. I eventually did some Google searches and discovered a ton of digital scrapbooking resources. My two favorite sites for papers, elements and kits are Designer Digitals and Little Dreamer Designs. Both have the style of product I like to use, and both have great sale days and freebies that got me started.

There are also a lot of scrapbooking software programs out there, many where you can drop photos into premade designs, but for me... scrapbooking is all about creative freedom. I like starting with a blank, white sheet of paper and layering items until I find the look I want. When I started, I also didn’t have any money to spend, which is why I opened the Publisher program already on my computer and just started. Which means any of you can start this endeavor without spending a fortune.

In Publisher I can open any photos and design elements, resize them, crop them and rotate them. I can layer photos with frames and embellishments and then group them together as one item so I don’t accidentally move or separate them after I place them how I want them. There are ways to change colors, contrast and saturation levels, and my favorite little trick is the little transparent wand that turns the white background transparent, allowing the background to show through.

Here’s an example of a photo, frame and four flower elements grouped together:
Example1

Easy Peasy.

Now, don’t get me wrong... I LOVE Photoshop. I process every single picture I take in that program. I can’t imagine photography without it, and a lot of people use it to create their scrapbooking pages as well. I just didn’t have the program when I started, and there was a learning curve that I didn’t take the time to figure out since I already had a simple system in place that I liked.

Basically, I attribute that to being lazy. :)

One other program I did purchase, before I got Photoshop, is FXFoto (creative edition). It’s a cheaper alternative that gave me a little more freedom and creativity with templates. Basically, any black frame/template that can be used around a photo, like this:

Example2

can have a paper placed over it to turn it into this:

Example3

Which means you have as many frame options as you have papers to drop on it. Again... so many think that their choices are more limited with digital scrapbooking, but I find I have so much more at my fingertips. There is a part of me that misses the actual paper in my hands, but even if I had the choice now I don’t think I’d go back. It’s especially nice because once I have a layout finished, I not only have it for my book but I can print out another copy and make the same book for Mom if I want... without having to recreate the project. So if you are scrapbooking the same event for more than one of your children’s books, this might be a route that’s for you.

So, there’s a quick overview of how I do my scrapbooking. If you guys have more in depth questions or want more specific information, let me know and I’ll be happy to help if I can. I’m obviously not a professional at this, but I’d be happy to share with you what I’ve found to be the simplest and least expensive way to enjoy this hobby.

Now... speaking of inexpensive...

I have a freebie of my own to pass along to you! :)

One of the “doodle requests” last week was for handwritten Months to lay over your photos or onto your scrapbook pages, much like the Days I had given you all previously. Ask and you shall receive...

I can’t wait to see what you guys came up with this week! Just click below and follow the instructions to link to your project. When it asks you to choose the web or a file for your thumbnail, choose web. Then it will take you to a list of the images on the page you are linking to and you’ll be able to choose a photo to represent your project.
