Black Hawk

Before the great couch-switch of 2009, I had some other fun company and household additions as well.

Do you remember when I told you the story of almost forgetting to get my license renewed last year? About how I was in too much pain to drive myself to the DMV, but then totally lied my head off about how disabled I was as I walked in with crutches, for fear they’d make me take a driving test? No? Well you can read about it here. It was also in that post that I acknowledged it was time to sell my car and move on from that part of my life.

And since my nephew Thomas is turning 16 today, they came a few weekends ago to pick up my car for him.

This is my sister Laura with the new driver… aren’t they cute? I can’t even tell you how much I love that family. This picture is also inadvertent proof that I answered this question honestly in my Facebook Interview: If you have friends coming for supper what would you cook? a takeout menu.

[What would I do without Applebee’s Carside-to-Go? At least I made sure they had a car to go fetch it in…]

I sent the camera outside with my sister to take a few shots for me. Here’s my brother-in-law, Jeff, doing his best to act like he knows what he’s looking at. [Just kidding, Jeff!]

And Thomas, just looking cool. The car suits him, don’t you think?

_MG_7630

He was trying to decide what to name the car [wonder where he gets that from… naming inanimate objects… *cough* George *cough*] when he noticed the county on my license plate is “Black Hawk” and thought it fit perfectly. Pretty creative, isn’t he?

I also greatly benefitted from their trip to see me… of course the best part was just seeing their faces… but the second best part was that Jeff installed ceiling fans in my red room, piano room and bedroom.

They are FANTASTIC.

_MG_7691

Not to mention pretty.

_MG_7695

I’ve always had a problem with the uneven airflow through the condo, with the back rooms staying hot in the summer and getting so cold in the winter that ice has actually formed on the inside of my walls. But that isn’t going to be a problem anymore…

_MG_7698

The main reason I wanted the fans, however, is because of the whole I-haven’t-been-able-to-breathe-thing. There’s nothing better when you’re short of breath than putting these fans on high and enjoying the wind tunnel they create.

Heaven, people. Pure heaven.

And did I mention they’re pretty, too? smile_teeth

love the fans! And the picture of your nephew and sis, they are such pretty people!
Does Riley get chilly with the fans on? My pups shiver with their new hair cut (shave)!
I can't sleep without a ceiling fan...hope they make life easier for your sweet self!

  2. Sounds like a fair exchange, a car for not 1, not 2, but 3 ceiling fans plus installation. Can't beat that! I have to agree with Robin, pretty sister and cute nephew with what looks like a heck of a nice new (to him) car.

I love the look of the ceiling fans, functional and decorative. Thinking of you and praying for better "bone delivery" for Riley today :-P

  4. Those fans are beautiful! I love the texture, and they look so awesome in your rooms. Enjoy them! I'm sure you were the favorite aunt to begin with, but no doubt now you've been elevated to something akin to queenship :)

  5. Oh, they've done far more for me than just give me ceiling fans... when it comes to my sister's family I'm always the one getting the better end of the bargain. They are so good to me. They are as good in their heart as they are cute in those photos :)

I took a pic of my thumb once it finally stopped bleeding... I'm sure there will be a blog about it in the next few days =-O

  11. a tad jealous I might say! BEE.UUU.TT.IFUL fans!! WOW! I LOVE! We have been looking for some to put up in the bedrooms for better night sleeping, but haven't found any that we love quite yet. These are gorgeous!

  13. I love the fans! I bet giving him your car was tough, but really sweet of you.

  14. You know, he doesn't shiver or anything, but he definitely gets cuddly with the blankets. I put him in a shirt now and then just cuz I'm worried about that.

I keep thinking I'll take them off high... but it just helps so much to have the air moving that I'm leaving it at wind tunnel speed :)

  23. thanks, sweet girl... i'm ridiculously lucky to have them do that for me. funny thing: when Jeff [my brother in law] told me to pick out one i liked, I ended up picking these and they were the EXACT same fans my sister picked out for her house when they built it. guess we have the same tastes :)

they really do make a difference for sleeping. hope you find some soon...

  24. hands down, no question, being an aunt is the best thing ever.

  25. we've done some trading for the car so it was a gift from his parents, not me. but on a personal/emotional level... knowing that my car was going to him and that he was excited about it took away all the sadness of having to acknowledge that part of my life was over. it would have been so much harder to let go, but now i think of it and get a smile on my face knowing that he has a piece of me with him... and that he has so much excitement ahead in his life. it's a pretty cool thing.

  26. I'll have to look and see if I took a photo of it... it was a HUGE chunk of ice that formed behind one of my pictures that was hanging.

I have a friend that had to be induced a few years ago, so she chose 4/5/06 for the date... it was kind of cool. Hope all goes well with your cousin!

  29. You have such pretty, pretty people in your family, Sara! I absolutely LOVE Laura's hairstyle. Wonder how I could get mine to look like that.

I hope you've been able to experience a noticeable difference in your breathing since with the ceiling fans running. What a great trade-off! You are so very loved...that's the best of all blessings!
Hugs & prayers from one who loves you, as well! :*

  30. I came across your blog a long and convoluted way. My father also had ankylosing spondylitis, with every conceivable complication. He fought is every day of his life, from the age of 13. In his 50s he still crewed a yacht in the Cape to Rio race. I just wanted to tell you that you have the same positive attitude. I know you are going to keep this down. There are the painful days, but there are lots of days you will feel better. Just keep moving. Wishing you all the best.
